Adoption FAQ
What is your adoption process?
We are a foster-based rescue, so once you know which cats you're interested in meeting, we will connect you with their foster to coordinate a meet and greet (virtual or in-person, depending on your and the foster's preferences and availability). If it seems like a good fit after the meet and greet, you'll be able to submit our adoption application online. We usually review adoption applications within a couple days. Once your application is approved, we'll provide information about how to pay the adoption fee and you'll be able to coordinate pick up directly with the foster. See the flowchart below for a visual explanation of this process!
Do you only accept in-state applications?
No! We accept adoption applications from anywhere that will provide a loving home to the cats in our care. While most of our cats are adopted within the DMV, we have had adoptions from all over the East Coast, including: Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.
How much does it cost to adopt?
The adoption fee is $100 for a cat over one year of age, $150 for a cat under a year of age, and $200 for a pair of kittens.
What does the adoption fee include?
The adoption fee includes a spay/neuter, microchip (which a new owner must register online), vaccinations including rabies (if a cat is over four months) and distemper, and a combo test for FIV and FeLV.
Do you adopt out to first-time pet owners?
Absolutely! We work with adopters to make sure they are getting a cat that fits their lifestyle and skill level.
Can I adopt a single kitten?
We generally do not adopt our single kittens under the age of one year to a home with no other animals. Kittens have an extreme amount of energy and need lots of attention so we do not feel it is fair to have them be in a home by themselves at such a young age. We encourage adoption in pairs for kittens under the age of one year. We also consider single adoptions to homes with other animals like cats and/or dogs.
Can I adopt if I have other animals in the house?
Yes! There may be situations where specific cats may do well by themselves in homes due to their behavior or background, but if a cat gets along with other animals in the home, we absolutely encourage it.
Can I adopt if I have small children?
Again, we work to ensure that every cat is going into the right home for them. Some of our kitties have come from homes with small children and have the personality that does well in that type of environment.
Can I return a cat if s/he doesn't work out?
We take adoptions very seriously. While we hope that the situation works out for your and your new adoptee(s), we recognize that there are sometimes circumstances that are unforeseen. We require in our contract that you must sign upon adopting that if you need to return a cat, it must be returned to our rescue. If we discover that a cat has been returned to another organization or has been abandoned, we reserve the right to take the cat back into our care.
